Psoriasis FAQs

Get all the facts on psoriasis.

Want to learn more about psoriasis? Whether you are living with psoriasis or know someone who is, our Toms River, NJ, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Robert Lee provides comprehensive care to individuals dealing with this chronic condition. Here’s what you should know,

What Is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a common chronic skin condition that causes skin cells to develop too quickly, which leads to a buildup of skin cells on the surface. All these extra cells on the skin result in thick, dry and red patches of skin that can be itchy or painful. Psoriasis is cyclical, meaning that you may have months of remission from your symptoms just to have them flare up again.

What Causes Psoriasis?

While we’ve yet to uncover what causes psoriasis, researchers have pinpointed that both the immune system and genetics may play a role. An overactive immune system may be the culprit behind your psoriasis. Of course, a family history of psoriasis could also mean that you’re more likely to develop this skin condition at some point during your lifetime.

What Are the Symptoms?

Many conditions can cause a rash that may look similar to psoriasis but isn’t. That’s why it’s a good idea to turn to our Toms River, NJ, dermatologist if you’re experiencing psoriasis symptoms but aren’t sure. Signs of psoriasis include red, inflamed patches of skin that are often scaly. These patches come and go, and they may crack or bleed. People with psoriasis may also notice nail discoloration and pitting.

What Causes a Flare-up?

There are many causes of a psoriasis flare-up. It’s important to know what triggers your symptoms to avoid them. Common triggers include,

  • Stress
  • Cold or dry climates
  • Certain medications such as lithium or beta-blockers
  • Strep throat or tonsillitis
  • Injuries to the skin
  • Smoking (even secondhand smoke)
  • Alcohol

How Is Psoriasis Treated?

Even though psoriasis is not currently curable, our Toms River, NJ, dermatologist can work with you to craft a treatment plan to reduce your flare-ups, control your symptoms and lengthen the remission time between flare-ups. Treatment options for psoriasis include,

  • Topical medications such as steroids
  • Lifestyle modifications such as quitting smoking or finding outlets to manage stress
  • Systemic medication such as retinoids, cyclosporine and biologics
  • Light therapy (also referred to as phototherapy)
